Swim dominates season

Manhattan High School Girls swim continues season with meets at Lansing and Topeka Hayden.

The team placed fourth at the Lansing Relays against Lansing High School, Shawnee Mission Northwest, De Soto, Leavenworth High School, Shawnee Heights Girls Swim, Mill Valley and St James Academy. 

In the 200- medley relay sophomore Samantha Tarter, junior Ruth Perez, senior Sophia Steffensmeier and senior Juliet Balman placed fourth with a total time of 2:02.54. Placing third in 4×100- individual medley relay, freshman Ava McKee, senior Avery Inman, Steffensmeier and Perez had a total time of 4:48.84. In the 100- free relay freshman Mary Brighton, sophomore Ellyn Campbell, senior Soledad Rodriguez and Inman placed fourth with a total time of 56.34. placing third in the 100-medley relay MHS had a final time of 1:03.90. In the 200- back relay, swimmers Balman, McKee, Tarter and Steffensmeier finished second with a time of 2:10.72. With a time of 3:31.17 freshman Alison Brunenn, Caris Goering, Inman and Perez placed first place in the 200- breast relay. In the 400- free relay, McKee, Tarter, Campbell and Balman placed fourth. 

“Winning the 200 breaststroke is one of my favorite memories from this season,” Inman said. “It’s rare to have lots of good breaststrokers on the team and we were super excited to do so well.” 

At Topeka Hayden, MHS girls swim placed first with a total score of 601. Starting off strong, in the 200- medley relay sophomore Samantha Tarter, junior Ruth Perez, senior Sophia Steffensmeier and senior Juliet Balman placed first with a final time of 2:04.02. Steffensmeier placed first with a time of 2:06.68 in the 200- free and sophomore Ellyn Campbell placed fourth with a time of 2:29.35. Balman placed first in the 200- IM with a time of 2:45.59 and senior Soledad Rodriguez placed fourth with 2:57.44. Senior Audrey Conley placed third in the 50- free with a time of 29.20 and freshman Mary Brighton placed fourth with a final time of 31.11. Junior Breanna Sanneman got second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 330.05. Steffensmeier placed first in the 100- butterfly with a time of 1:03.16, Rodriguez followed in fourth with a time of 1:18.58. Balman and Tarter placed first and third in the 100- free, finishing with a time of 1:01.58 and a 1:11.47. In the 500- free MHS placed first, third, and fourth. Perez placed first with a time of 5:42.40, Inman placed third with a time of 6:18.61 and McKee placed fourth with a final time of 6:42.92. In first place Steffensmeier, Campbell, Balman and Perez had a final time of 1:52.93. Perez went on to place first in the 100- breast with a time of 1:13.25. In the 100- back Tarter placed third with a final time of 1:11.76, later on she helped MHS place first in the 400- free relay along with Campbell, Conley and Inman. They had a final time of 4:31.06.

“It’s crazy how quickly this season has gone by,” Inman said. I’m so proud of all the girls on the team and I can’t wait to showcase our talents at League in a couple of weeks.”
