After a blowout 29-point victory over Dodge City last Friday, the Manhattan Lady Indians have leapt out to a quick 4-1 record on the season.

After the girls lost their season opener, they have outscored opponents by a whopping 86 points.
So far, the Lady Indians have been superb on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

The girls have really improved this season, with an 80%-win percentage being better than last year’s 33%, and they’re only getting better and better.

“I think we’ve bounced back so well after the first loss because there’s a true hate for losing on the team, ”senior Maxine Doering said “Everyone is just such a competitor, so there was so much we want to be better and prove we are capable of winning.”

That true hate for losing really shows on the court, with it being a binding factor between the girls so early in the season.

“I think things are clicking because most everyone has a similar style of play and wants to play with a fast pace,” Doering said. “There are definitely some small kinks but that’s expected and will be worked out the more time we have.”

One thing that differentiates the Lady Indians from their opponent is their ball speed. They make it look like dribbling is illegal with the number of passes made in a single possession.

“We have been working at practice to make sure we are playing with a good pace but most importantly ball movement. “Doering said, “Coach Mall is really stressing that we have multiple ball reversals in each possession because that is hard for the defense to defend and will wear them out quicker.”

The Lady Indians’ next game is against Topeka High on Tuesday.
