Manhattan High school had to evacuate E-hall due to a chemical storage concern. The chemical had become crystallized and the fire department was uneasy that the chemical may be shock sensitive.
“I was in math, and we were taking our gateway, and someone came in,” Junior Ava Connell said. “I don’t even remember who it was, and they just said that we had to evacuate and go to Rezac and that the fire department was on their way.”
The fire department arrived early this morning shortly after 9 a.m. to clean up the chemical. The fire department was concerned that the chemical may be sensitive.
“I smelled it when we were in class, It smelled like tuna,” Senior Bryson Gnirk said.
The staff and students were quickly evacuated after the discovery of the chemical. Students who have classes in that area were sent to Rezac to stay safe.
“ I honestly didn’t feel that panicked because they just told us to grab our stuff,” Connell said. “and we were staying in the building and that it wasn’t everyone who was being evacuated.”
The chemical was determined to not be a shock-sensitive chemical and was safety removed from the building.
