Following a magical season in which they were crowned 6A State Champions, the Manhattan Indians girls golf team is right back on top of the podium. The Indians snatched first in both of their first two tournaments of the season.
“Having gotten first in both of those, it’s definitely really exciting,” junior Maddie Myers said.
Manhattan High’s team score of 307 propelled them to the top spot in the Blue Valley Southwest Lady Legends Golf Classic in Heritage Park on Sept. 4. Senior Kat Ball led the way with a low score of 73 putting her in the second spot individually. Myers and senior Lily Bahr tied for fourth place with a score of 76, senior Wrenn Burton took eighth with a score of 82 and seniors Jessica Kim (91) and Alyse Yoxall (96) took 23rd and 32nd respectively.
The course conditions in Heritage Park made for an extra challenge.
“They had aerated the greens [two days before the meet]. So the greens were really super sandy, and they had some holes punched in them, which made it super, super hard to putt,” Myers said.
Despite the added obstacle, MHS took the dub.
In the Wamego Invitational, the Indians first tournament of the year, they secured first with a team score of 319, edging out Shawnee Mission East’s 321 points on Sept. 2.
“Our biggest competition, and we’ve known about it for a while, is Shawnee Mission East,” Bahr said. “We beat them at state last year. But every given tournament, it can be either one of us, depending on which of our players step up.”
Myers finished the Wamego Invitational tied for second place individually, with a score of 72. Bahr (7th), Ball (T-9th) and Burton (T-9th) also placed in the top 10. The four of them were all on Varsity last year for the State title, while seniors Jessica Kim and Alyse Yoxall, who both tied for 20th, stepped up from JV.
“Our chemistry has been great,” Bahr said. “We all are super good friends. And even the two new ones, we just have brought them right in.”
The Indians competed at Salina Central on Tuesday.
