Golf takes gold in early season

The Varsity Girls golf team has placed first in three of four meets since August.

For the first meet of the season, the Firebird Invitational in Lawrence, the team consisted of freshman Maddie Myers; sophomores Lily Bahr, Kat Ball, Wrenn Burton; juniors Emily Wuggazer and Kaitlyn Lagabed; and senior Jessica Kim.

They had a team score of 344. Myers (79)  led the team for fifth, Bahr (86) came in 11th, Ball (88) was 13th, Wuggazer (91) earned 15th, Lagabed (93) took 21st and Kim (97)  was 27th.

Next they attended the 6A state preview in Emporia on Aug 30. Ball led with an 81 and Bahr with an 83, combining for a 75 and fourth place pair. Myers (79) and sophomore Wrenn Burton (86) combined for a 76 and a fifth place pair. Wuggazer (87) and Kim (96) combined for 83 points. Overall the MHS team tied for first place and with a score of 234.

“For both meets I didn’t do my best but I haven’t been feeling the greatest either so there’s that,” Wuggazer said. “But overall as a team I think we did pretty good. As a team I feel like… on Wednesday we played with one of our girls so that was fun but different. It was a different type of tournament.”

Their next meet was in Washburn Rural Great Plains Classic at the Wamego Country Club on Sept. 5. They brought another first place with a team score of 332. Bahr (80) was fourth, Ball (82) was eighth, Myers (83) took ninth, Wuggazer (87) was 17th, Lagabed (94) placed 26th and Burton (98) took 35th.

“It went pretty good, I feel like for my first two. I think I definitely improved in what I did and made some… smarter decisions,” Myers said. “I feel like the first one at Lawrence went really well because of how tough the course is but also the Emporia meet I feel like our team did really well, like we all scored well.”

The team was at Salina South on Monday and will have Centennial League next Monday in Emporia.
