Prom trends to be aware of

Savannah Cherms, Entertainment Editor

  1. Two piece dresses. A nice change from the typical long dress that everyone will be rocking, a two piece dress is a great way to stand out and show some personality on prom night.
  2. Nontraditional Up-do. It seems like every year as girls browse twitter and pinterest for hair ideas, everyone ends up with the same curly loose updo. This year go for something different with baby buns, a twisted mohawk, or a faux undercut.
  3. A colored tuxedo. Step out of the traditional black and white tux and go for a more unique colored one. You could coordinate colors with your date, and stand out from the crowd.
  4. Ditching Prom. It’s almost inevitable that at some point in the night you’re going to want to bail and call prom night quits. Need somewhere to go? IHOP, McDonald’s, and the Varsity Truck are going to be the place to be after prom night.
  5. Skipping Prom altogether. Whether it’s because you’re lacking a date or didn’t want to spend all the cash on a dress and dinner, prom isn’t for everyone. And that’s cool too! Stay at home in your PJ’s or go hang out with friends. Or, find something cool you and your would-be date can do that night instead.
  6. After Parties. Sure, you could go out after prom with all of your friends and get totally and completely wasted and ruin your lives with DUI’s and whatnot. Or you could go to MARCP’s AfterProm and eat Chipotle and hang out with your friends. Or just go home with your group and party that way. Netflix just updated their library, why not watch a prom themed movie.
  7. Nontraditional dinner. Instead of shelling out $100 on a swanky dinner for you and your date, keep it casual and grab a burrito from Chipotle or a burger from Five Guys. No need to break the bank on pricey food you might not even like. A McDouble is almost better than that $40 pasta that you can’t pronounce.
  8. Friends vs Dates. Sometime’s it’s more fun to spend prom with your friends versus stressing out about asking a date. And you won’t have to endure the awkward slow dances because you’ll be too busy laughing it up with your friends. And it’s an opportunity to create memories with your pals you won’t ever forget.
  9. Unique prom photos. Instead of the uncomfortable traditional prom poses, mix it up this prom season. Make stupid faces, get into some seriously weird poses, or create a still scene that really tells a story. You’ll probably be happier with your uncommon photos than you would be with the typical poses with everyone in a line.
  10. Girls in Suits. Dresses aren’t always the most comfortable things in the world. So instead, try showing off your own style and dress up in a suit this prom season. You can get suits tailored specifically for a female body, and you can personalize it as much or as little as you’d like, just like a dress.
  11. Sandals vs heels. Like dresses, heels aren’t always comfortable either. Unless you’ve been wearing them for years and already can’t feel your feet, those 5 inch heels probably won’t make it through the whole night. Not to fear, because your trusty Birkenstocks or Chaco’s will save you from the world of pain your feet will be in. Not a sandal fan? Vans or Converse are always a stylish option.
  12. Promposals. Everyone has seen those huge, flashy promposals on Twitter, where the guy gets the girl a puppy or has this huge elaborate scene planned out. If that’s your thing, go for it! Your date will appreciate your attention to detail. If not, a simple verbal promposal will do. Not everyone wants the entire student body present for something as simple as being asked to prom.
