Set for scrimmages

Just like most team sports, volleyball is starting off the year with a scrimmage. The matches are set for Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the North gym.

“[The scrimmage] is just to get us prepared for our upcoming games,” head coach Lisa Kinderknecht said, “They’ll have a referee there and they get to feel a real game. They’ll have their uniforms. [It’s] really to get their game speed practice.”

While the girls have been split into J.V. and Varsity for the scrimmage, there were some players who were difficult to place due to limitations on how many players a team can have. So some players may have the opportunity to move up to Varsity as the season grows.

“We just recently did that [sorting the players into J.V and Varsity],” Kinderknecht said. “but at the sophomore through senior level we have 20 girls capable of playing Varsity. We just can’t play that many. So yeah, we’ve kind of separated them out for now. There is always chance for moving [to and from Varsity squad].”

This year, Varsity will also have to handle having only two seniors, Gigi McAtee and Jaylie Thornton.

“[My goal] is to create a good bond within the team and push for success,” Thornton said. “We [seniors] do have to take a strong leadership role in that but there shouldn’t be too much difference [from last year].”

After the scrimmages, freshmen will have their first real match of the season on Thursday while Varsity and J.V. will begin on Sept. 8 with Varsity at Seaman and J.V. in Manhattan.
