After months of battling the cold and the authorities alike, a scene of happiness is found in Standing Rock. Sunday, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Obama administration have denied permission for the Dakota Access Pipeline to carry out its current route.

“The consideration of alternative routes would be best accomplished through an Environmental Impact Statement with full public input and analysis,” reads the statement released by the Corp of Engineers.

After the news was heard, celebrations were quickly underway at protest grounds and across the world. However, North Dakota governor Jack Dalrymple has publically announced his distaste for the change, stating that he felt it was a “serious mistake” by the Obama administration.

Despite the overall mixed feelings, the Standing Rock Sioux tribe stated that they would like to mend the relationships with law enforcement. The tribe also thanked veterans who had donated generously and offered their support for the protesters days earlier. Where the pipeline will go from here is yet to be determined.
