Divers have solid performances in Shawnee

There is a different view that most students don’t have — looking off the diving boards on a Saturday morning. While many students were sleeping in, the Manhattan diving team had a meet at Shawnee Mission East.

Sophomore Zane Kohl finished in fifth with his teammate freshman Tysen Plummer finishing in seventh place.

“It was a good meet overall,” Kohl said. “I wasn’t feeling it at first but still was able to turn some of the easier dives into good scores. I am glad I was able to pull out a medal.”

The warm-ups seem to help a lot with the overall scores during the meet.

“It is very funny that the dive I back flopped on in warm up turned out to be my best dive,” Plummer said.

The meet was very early, especially for a Saturday, starting at nine in the morning. Because of this early start the divers had to wake up early and take a van out to the meet.

“It was a bit weird having only the two of us in the van,” Plummer said, “but it gave us a lot of space to sleep, which I really liked.”

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the environment of the meet and affect the divers.

“The water was colder than what I am used to,” Kohl said. “The environment also was kind of awkward, if that makes sense. I just feel this all affected my performance and I think we could have done better.”

The Manhattan diving team will have a quick turnaround as they compete on Friday here at the Natatorium in the Manhattan Invitational.
