Seniors embrace last ‘first’ tournament

On a warm August afternoon senior Lydia Fry lines up her shot. It’s her first tee off for the day with many more to come and she feels a light wind on her face. She swings back and hits the ball, without realizing it, Fry and the two other seniors have taken their last first drive of the year.

The Shawnee Heights Invitational marked the first tournament of the season for the Manhattan High girls golf team. They had a decent performance for their first tournament of the year coming in third place out of the five teams that participated.

“I think from box to green I was okay but for me personally my putting needed to improve as well as some short game shots, chipping wise.” senior Delaney Wisdom said.

This was the common theme for the girls on Thursday with shots being just off and their first tournament being a little rocky but senior Lydia Fry did not seem surprised.

“It is always rough the first tournament,” Fry said. “I feel like because we are just getting back into the tournament feeling and going in as a team.”

The recognition that the seniors were competing in their last first tournament was followed with mixed emotions.

“I didn’t even realize it really until afterwards when I was looking at our picture of our team and I was like wow this is the last time this will happen,” Fry said. “I mean the first tournament is always kind of rough so It’s kinda nice to have it done but it’s sad knowing this is my last year.”

However with all of the team from last year returning, there is a bright year ahead of the lady Indians.

“I feel like our team definitely has strong players so i think that we have a great chance of bringing home a title at state.” Wisdom said.

With three seniors that have been leading the team since sophomore year they are prepared for a strong season and look to bring a title back to Manhattan.
