Support Native American businesses; how to do it

Elizabeth Alexander, Trending Editor

Throughout the country, Native Americans have established many companies, industries and businesses. This is important because their role plays just as much of an important role as any business in America. How to support them as individuals, however, is the question. The purpose of this guide is to show several methods on how to support your local Native American business.

Do your research. A big hit in Native American-owned business is clothing and jewelry, but many other companies will try to mimic and produce fake, non-authentic items. If you want to sport an item of clothing or a piece of jewelry from the Native American lifestyle, it is best that you research where you buy your products from. Ensure that that business is owned by Native Americans, and if you can, see if it is local as well.

Advertise. Like any other business, get their name out and share what they produce. If you enjoy what the company does and produces for you, recommend to your friends who are in the market for what you received. This helps the company gain publicity, thus gaining more customers and profit.

Educate yourself, widen your horizon. There are more than just jewelry and clothing shops that are owned by Native Americans. Native American restaurants exist, as well as manufacturing industries, recovery and enhancement stores, engineering companies, craft shops and so much more. Take the time to perhaps try something new in terms of where you purchase your everyday products.

Learn where the profits go. Most business’ profits go to the business itself, but some share their profit to go towards reservations and Native American programs. If you want to do something about saving reservations and preserving Native American culture, become a patron at your local Native American business and learn about what their motive is.

Leave reviews. Nearly all businesses in the modern age are featured on Yelp, have social media pages or websites. For the media-savvy crowd, leaving online reviews is a wise option when it comes to promoting and helping Native American businesses. A positive review primarily helps customers make a decision to visit the establishment. A negative, but constructive interview can help the business grow and learn from mistakes, enhancing quality and service.
