Intramurals end with intensity

The main event of any sport is the championship. Whether it’s intramurals or not, grind time starts when the regular season stops. Every year at Manhattan High at the conclusion of the intramural basketball season a tournament is held to decide the best team that was put together for that year.

All of the games were played on Wednesday. During the B Bracket intramural games the Sofa Ballers, consisting of seniors Dirk Andrade, Dylan Higgins, Elijah Jepson and Kannon Phipps, as well as Adam Fischer who was not in attendance for the game, faced off against No Smoke. No Smoke only had three players there for the game, since junior Chace McIlvaine couldn’t be there, those being: juniors Jaylynn Liggons, Gavin Kohn and Jack Everdeen.

“My whole team is out of shape so I think that one sub would’ve been helpful,” Liggons said.

Unfortunately the three players just couldn’t keep up in the quick game, giving the Sofa Ballers a slight advantage. They used this to their best efforts, winning the game, even though they let No Smoke make a comeback in the last few minutes.

Following the B team championship, the girls faced off in their own section of finals. Dynamite 3.0, made up of seniors Megan Klug, Hana Tamura, Nicki Keller, Tessa Irvine and Cailey Perkins, came out on top after beating the McBallers which included juniors Anna Huey, Ally Brickei, Jill Broxterman, Elise Jackson and Izzie Williams. With there only being five girls teams participating in general, teams often play each other multiple times just as Dynamite 3.0 and the McBallers did.

The last game of the night was the game that decided it all, the A team championship games. Much like the girls, these teams played each other twice in double elimination. During this Lob City, consisting of seniors Cooper Schroeder, Nik Grubbs, Connor Lierz and Matt Bollman, played Dunks Unlimited who was made up of seniors Jackson Boyle, Tyler Trawick, Ben Robben, Ethan Kaus and Ben Choi. While the results were split, technically Lob City came out on top. The first game was neck and neck the entire time with Dunks Unlimited winning 48-47. Fortunately for Lob City they would get another chance at the victory.

“It was double elimination and we lost the first one to them and then beat them in the 29-28 in the championship,” Schroeder said.

With the matches being split, there is some controversy about who the actual winners were. Both teams won a game in the championship, so while it is uncertain, Lob City won the last game leaving them with the T-shirts and the title. Yet both teams have added something on their Twitter pages stating that they are the intramural champs, leaving the rest of the school a little confused.

Regardless of the outcomes, everyone playing intramurals during the 2017-2018 season enjoyed the games and were proud to be a part of something even it was just for fun.

“It’s fun and it’s something to do instead of just laying around,” Liggons said.
