  1. Black Cats
    1. Ever wonder why black cats have been deemed as “bad luck?” According to LiveScience, elderly women were often accused of witchcraft and their pets were said to be demonic animals given by the devil. How’s that for your crazy cat lady aspirations?
  2. Spiders really are evil
    1. For all you Arachnophobes — here’s a valid reason you can use when you get teased for being scared of something so common. Spiders were also considered evil companions of witches during medieval times. One legend claims that if a spider falls into a candle-lit lamp and burns up, witches are nearby.
  3. Hold your breath
    1. According to American Folklore, evil spirits can’t enter your body as you drive past a cemetery if you hold your breath. When passing a graveyard or a house where someone has died, turn your pockets inside out to make sure you don’t bring home a ghost in your pocket.
  4. Maybe hold off on lighting a candle at a ceremony?
    1. Legend says that if you light a candle as part of a ceremony and it goes out, it’s a sign that evil spirits are close.
  5. If you do light a candle, choose the right color
    1. Apparently if you light an orange candle at midnight on Halloween and let it burn until sunrise, it’ll bring you good luck. As long as it doesn’t burn your house down. That wouldn’t be very lucky, now would it?
  6. Knock knock
    1. If you hear three knocks and no one is there, it means that someone close to you has died.
