Manhattan High School alumnus and professional actor and writer Richard Broadhurst visited MHS last week.

Broadhurst was here because he was selected to be put in the MHS Alumni Association “Wall of Fame” thanks to his career experience.

“They contacted me telling me I was nominated. I was surprised. And they also put my best friend growing up, too,” Broadhurst said. “It is very sweet. I’m not sure I deserved it, but it was very sweet.”

After graduating from MHS in 1964 and spending some time at Kansas State, Broadhurst started his acting career in New York. Eventually he moved from acting to writing, and he went on to teach acting and writing in New York, Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Apart from coming for the ceremony on Feb. 12, Broadhurst also worked with the drama classes, giving them writing and acting tips.

“We did some acting and writing exercises. They were very creative,” Broadhurst said. “I was very impressed. I just want it to encourage them to follow any creative endeavoring they might have.”

He also came as a guest speaker to the journalism class. He talked to the newspaper and yearbook students about how being in a journalism class helped him throughout his career.

“I was the sports editor of the yearbook. I really liked it,” Broadhurst said. “The publications work the same as they used to when I was on staff. it is very interesting.”
