Parents as teachers make unique experience for student children

Most kids don’t have to worry about seeing their parents at school on a daily basis. Likewise, most parents don’t typically see their children at work every day.

However, that isn’t the case for senior Micah Sapp and his mother, math teacher Laura Sapp.

Although Micah is a senior this year, he’s only taken one actual class with his mother: College Algebra through Manhattan Christian College. Other than that, he has only been a teacher aide throughout high school.

Micah saw some advantages in having his mother at school with him, including help with homework and grades. Nevertheless, there are downsides to having your parent at school.

“She has more awareness than most parents,” Micah said.

Teachers aren’t the only faculty members that see their kids at school. Sophomore Lena Kraus goes to school with her mother, paraeducator Cynthia Kraus, every day.

“It’s nice having her there for the questions that you have because she is in the classes with some of my teachers,” Lena said, “and I can always ask her for help.”
