  1. “Thriller” – Michael Jackson

This time of the year unanimously calls for the ultimate Halloween anthem. A breakout hit in 1982, MIchael Jackson’s “Thriller” has stood by not only the test of time, but has spread globally as pop culture’s favorite spooky classic.

  1. “Lucifer” – Jay Z

Wait. You mean to tell me Hip-Hop and Halloween can go together? Jay Z’s banger off his renowned “Black Album” is the perfect mixture of urban east-coast rhythm and rhymes. With a touch of the fitting grimy and gritty instrumental that is featured under Jay Z’s verses, the song completes itself into an uncontrollable jam. If you’re looking for something to set your auxiliary into rapturous fire, then you’re reading the right article.

  1. “I Wanna Be Adored” – Stone Roses

As the first words of this indie rock hymn utter over its sombrous melody, the mood for a hollow and ghostly evening will set in. While Ian Brown starts off the tune with the notorious “I don’t want to sell my soul, he’s already in me,” all you have to remember is that the only thing you have to sell your soul to on Halloween is tons and tons of fun-size candy.

  1. “Disturbia” – Rihanna

Rihanna’s 2008 pop hit raged into a Halloween favorite with its dark and alternative sound. A  certain standout in sound and style during the blob that was the 2000s gimmicky radio pop era, Rihanna’s “Disturbia”, among other Rihanna songs, delivers a slightly different sound than your average pop star. Good for dancing with peers, friends or by yourself.

  1. “I Put A Spell On You” – Creedence Clearwater Revival

A soulful epitome written originally by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and performed by artists such as Nina Simone, “I Put A Spell On You” has been proved to be an intergenerational tune whose words echo among many. The CCR cover however, proves to be the spookiest of all the variations, generating a ghostly sound adequate for not only the classic rock lover, but also the common listener.

  1. “Psycho Killer” – Talking Heads

Punk forefathers Talking Heads’ most played single has turned culturally into a cult classic that fits Halloween like peanut butter does jelly. The bassline that kicks off the classic is only the beginning, the punky vocals along with the groovy melody make for fitting tune during the holiday.

  1. “Hypnotize” – The Notorious B.I.G

To answer a question mentioned earlier in the list, yes Halloween and hip-hop can go together. In this grimy and eerie rap classic, Biggie delivers a tone and an atmosphere like no other. Along with the “hypnotizing” chorus, the lyrics provide a darker and uniquely sombre undertone that simply can not be matched by any other hip-hop artists.

  1. “She Wolf” – Shakira

Electronically sinister yet melodically fun, Shakira’s “She Wolf” is one of the most easy going and laid back songs on the playlist. With a colorful sound that breaks through the stigma of radio pop, she delivers a dance party must-have for those dance-party dudes and gals.

  1. “Ghostbusters” – Ray Parker Jr.

The title might give this one away. Worth a listen for the playful memories this track might bring, it is a perfect theme for the not-caring adolescents who still go out trick-and-treating. Also Ghostbusters fanatics.

  1. “Monster Mash” – Bobby “Boris” Pickett

Another one for the remembrances. “Monster Mash” is one of the funnest songs to dance along to. The perfect theme song for an eerie, yet fun and varied holiday with family or friends.

  1. “Black Magic Woman” – Santana

Although originally written by CCR, the Santana version of “Black Magic Woman” is spicier and fuller in sound and complexity. Santana’s latin rhythm and famous guitar flows through the song making it ambiguously mysterious but beautifully charming all the same time. If you’re looking at a psychedelic and thoughtful evening, this should be entering your ears through headphones and that’s that.

  1. “Zombie” – The Cranberries

An intense and jittering 90s alternative song which you probably will not recognize until after listening and telling yourself outloud “oh it’s this song.” The hypnotic vocals and rampant instrumentation come together with the dark nature of the lyrics. Save for emotional sessions of looking out the window of a bus or car while raining.

  1. “Tuff Ghost” – The Unicorns

Hooking you with a melancholy and experimental synth-pop intro, indie rock outfit The Unicorns put out a song that provides aggression, punch and a listen that will at least leave you intrigued. Perfect for a spooky atmosphere worth entrancing in.
