Celebrating the presidential inauguration

Throughout the history of the United States of America, the presidential inauguration has taken place everywhere from in front of thousands with fanfare and extravagance, to simply the oval office with the first family. Regardless of the inaugural milieu, this American tradition is nationally recognized with several events.

Liberty Ball

This lavish inaugural ball took place on the night of the inauguration and was the first celebratory event to welcome the new President and first lady. They also made an appearance at the Freedom Ball, which was, like the Liberty Ball, held in the Washington Convention Center. These events were two of three official inaugural balls, though many unofficial ones also took place.

Salute to Our Armed Services Ball

Honoring military service members, the third official inaugural ball that the President and first lady attended also included a live video chat with soldiers currently deployed in Afghanistan. This event, like the other official balls, involved a brief address by the President to those in attendance. This year’s Salute to Our Armed Services Ball was attended not only by the military, but also by many first responders.

Sister Cities International Inaugural Gala

Like many of the numerous unofficial inaugural events, the Sister Cities International Inaugural Gala was open to the public. This gala honored diplomats from a wealth of different embassies, several of whom were in attendance, and strove to promote peace and the global appearance of the United States.

Inauguration Day at the Newseum

This unique event was less like the traditional inaugural balls and more of an interactive experience of the inauguration. It offered attendees open access to all of the Newseum’s exhibits and galleries, giving them a one-of-a-kind history lesson on Inauguration Day. The Newseum neighbors Pennsylvania Avenue, allowing guests to have an up-front view of the inaugural parade.
