Oscar award nominations

It’s been a record-breaking year in many ways. For the first time, someone without any political or military experience was elected president and a woman was the candidate of a major party. In entertainment news, an IMAX movie theater opened up at Manhattan Town Center…  and this year’s Oscars nominations made history, too.

  1. Six out of the 20 nominated Best Actors are African-American — a record in the Oscars’ 88 years. This group includes Naomie Harris, Octavia Spencer, Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali and Ruth Negga.

  1. “La La Land,” a musical comedy about two people trying to make it as entertainers in Los Angeles and remain in love at the same time is tied for the highest number of nominations of any movie. It is matched by “Titanic” and “All About Eve.”

  1. Meryl Streep earned her 20th nomination with Best Actress in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” adding the title of most-nominated performer in the history of the Oscars to her already (very) impressive resume.
  2. The selection for Best Supporting Actress made Davis the first black actress ever to receive three Oscar nominations. Davis has been nominated for her roles in “Doubt,” “The Help” and, most recently “Fences,” a drama about an African-American father grappling with his past in the 1950s.

The guy behind “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda, could become the youngest person ever to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Miranda wrote and was nominated for the song “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s “Moana.”
