Cross Country defends league titles

Both the boys and girls cross country teams took to Felker Park in Topeka Saturday and defended their Centennial League titles.

The girls team ran very well, taking home the title, with all eight girls medaling. Senior Cara Melgares won her third individual title.

“The girls ran in a pack very well and we all helped each other out,” Melgares said. “I get such a rewarding feeling from being able to succeed and see all my teammates succeed.”

The boys’ placings were a little more spread out but they were also able to take home the league title. Junior Cooper Schroeder placed the highest of the Manhattan runners coming in fourth place. Coach Susan Melgares attributes the fact that the boys’ times were much more spaced out to some health issues that the boys were dealing with. She was still very proud of the fight that they had to show to come up with another league title.

The sweep of the Centennial League meet marks the seventh consecutive league title for the Indians. It seems like the rest from last week extremely helped the runners, who now need to rest their legs and prepare for their regional meet at regionals at Warner Park on Saturday.
