Finding Scholarships

Cora Astin, Staff Writer

Between graduating high school, college applications and college decisions, being a senior is rough. Not to mention trying to navigate the vast sea of scholarships. Each year millions of organizations and companies have scholarships up for grabs, but it’s hard to tell which ones are legitimate.

To help out, the counseling department has an accumulating list of scholarships and suggested websites from which to find scholarships.

Scholarship List through the Counseling office —

To view this list go to the school’s website, then to the counseling department and the Financial Aid and Scholarship tab. This scholarship list is also posted online through Naviance.

On this list there are hundreds of accumulated scholarships that the counseling office receives each year. Information about the scholarships includes the allotted amount of money, deadlines, a brief description, the organization who sponsors the scholarship and a link to the scholarship application.

Scholarship information specific to the Manhattan-Ogden School district is sent out in January,  with deadlines in the spring.

Websites —

There are many scholarship sites out there but the counseling office recommends FinAid, the Scholarship Academy and Big Future. Also, a common website that students use is Fastweb. Please take caution when you search for scholarships. To help seek out legit scholarships, use the Scholarship Workshop. This website also gives you tips on how to apply for scholarships.

ACT scores-based scholarships —

For the each portion of the ACT there are different score-based scholarships that are available based on what you score. These scholarships are sponsored by the College Board, so no fears they are legit.

Other Tips —

To help improve your ACT scores — which helps broaden the amount of scholarships you can apply for — take more rigorous classes.

Check with the institution you are applying to for any department or institution only scholarships.

Any organizations that you are a part of such as 4-H, your church or where you volunteer at.

Don’t forget to check where your parents work.

Also make sure you apply to anything and everything that you qualify for, as long as you can tell that is legit.
