How school affects sleep: Teachers and students

Nina Kumle, Staff Writer

Lack of sleep is something we all experience at some point in our lives. Normally when you talk about being exhausted at school, it comes from a student. But lack of sleep affects both students and teachers alike.

Student:  Freshman Jadielyn Cruz-Bianchi   Teacher:Tahnee Matuszewicz

Do you think you get enough sleep?

Cruz-Bianchi: No.

Matuszewicz: No.

Does not getting enough sleep affect you at school?

Cruz-Bianchi: I am very tired in class and occasionally fall asleep in my classes.

Matuszewicz: Yes definitely, I can tell that my students understand the lesson a lot better when I’ve slept well, it’s just a lot more clear when explaining and I think it’s definitely impacting student for sure.

Does school affect your sleep schedule?

Cruz-Bianchi: Yes because then I have homework and I also have sports and so i’ll have the sports and then i’ll have to go home and do my school work so then won’t be getting to bed until midnight and I have to wake up at five.

Matuszewicz: Sometimes yes, it just depends on how hectic the day is and how either far behind or how far I am on lesson planning. I have to get it done before I get to school so it’s either stay up late or get up extra early to get it done.

How many hours do you think you sleep on average?

Cruz-Bianchi: Five or less.

Matuszewicz: I would say six to seven.

How much does schoolwork cut into your sleep time?

Cruz-Bianchi: Couple hours, because by the time we get home I’ll have like a couple hours before ten and then i’ll have to spend all that time on homework.

Matuszewicz: It depends on if it’s a week where there’s lots of grading, if we’ve had tests, will change how much time I have to be up late doing things, but I would say I usually spend three hours a night doing school work, so it’s just depending on if I have other things going on after school like I have meetings that I have to go do, if there’s athletics and things I want to go do then I have to do that when I get home later.
